Yet Another New Corolla Owner
Hello! I am a new owner of a 1998 Toyota Corolla (LE), Automatic. The current mileage is 188,000 miles. I bought it around 160,000. Currently I use the car to go to and from college, as well as shopping errands. This car mostly sees highway usage.
My family mostly owns Toyota's, and none of their cars are even hinting at not being road worthy anymore, so I come to the company with good experiences and expectations. However, I have had a few issues with this car, but I attribute most of it to its past owners.
First I had a shake in my engine. It was bad enough to disrupt my driving. The first thing I thought of was a cylinder not firing properly, so I changed the spark plugs. While I did I noticed the last person didn't even use anti-seize! Regardless, new plugs, engine stopped shaking, fuel efficiency went up by about 50 miles to the tank (8 gallons I think).
With that experience, I think the car has been poorly handled. I've also had to replace the front struts, and will need to replace the rear struts, but that's something I've been expecting.
I don't have any photos of the car yet but I'll upload some when I get a chance. I'll probably even make an album somewhere with close up shots of everything that doesn't require removal.
So with that! Hello everyone, if you have any tips on how I should take care of this car, what parts I should be looking at, or even where I should be getting my replacement parts (or which ones) please let me know. I'll probably post around the forums, where appropriate, about more specific questions involving my car.
So far here's my immediate to-do list on my car:
- Oil Change (It's just about due for another)
- New Tires (Front ones lose about 10 psi a week; All around terrible in the snow/rain)
- Rear Struts (Bouncing is fun up until you have a bad day)
- Inspect Alignment; Tire related problems? (Mild left-right shaking in the steering wheel @ 55+ MPH)
- Inspect struts (knocking sound from underneath the front of the car when going over bumps, can physically move the bar slightly, but can't reproduce the same loudness of knocking)
P.S. This is the second car I've ever owned. The first was a Ford, which was unreliable especially when trying to start it. Sold it, and that person managed to blow the engine. This is how I ended up with a Toyota. LOL.
