European Union New Kid on the Block from Stockholm

Camry 93 owner here.

Jeez these V6's were made to go and go. We had the underbody rustproofed last year cos I figured that the engine would go on for a 1000 years or at least until it dropped out of the frame.

I'm not mechanically inclined, so humour me. My Green ECO light has not come on for 5 months and my mileage is pi**poor.

I figured that the air and oil filters would benefit from a change - we have the roads salted. I have bought the parts but don't know where to start. I'm hoping the air fliter would be a 10 minute job.

Any offers of help gladly received.

Cool

Welcome to another 3vz-fe owner!
Stockholm, Mississippi is a beautiful place too! (that's a joke)

Don't freak out that a few things may be in the opposite side of your engine bay. Remember north american cars drive on the other side of the road!

The air filter is in the black plastic box, middle of this shot

The box is held together by 4 clips that pop off (normally with a little force, so don't hurt a finger!) To pull it all the way off, you may need to take the rubber hose off. Just be careful. Normally they're split open at this age, and that is very bad.

The oil filter is under the exhaust manifold's heat shield. See the rather larger silver part at the bottom of this picture? Three nuts hold it on, and you wiggle it off. Be careful not to break the o2 sensor. (you'll know it when you see it. It looks like a little plug with a wire comming out of it bolted into the side of what you're taking off) If you want, you can cut the part of the head shield that goes around this sensor off. That makes it a hell of a lot easier to take the heat shield off!
^^^
If you dont understand what I'm talking about don't worry. You'll figure out what I mean when you go to change the oil filte really quickly!

Which exposes

Drain the oil from the pan before you take the filter off, and when you do take the filter off, have an old towell (or large worthless rag) wrapped around the filter, because it's going to dump some oil out and make a mess.

If you need any help, feel free to post it in the Camry forum, or contact someone that looks smart, like racergirl.

URA*,

I'll tell you how I get on with the air filter later today. The oilf filter looks like I need to take the car off the public highway before I start work.

I can't thank you enough.

Your instructions on the air filter were spot on. 10 mins of fiddling wondering how much force to apply.

The old filter was off-white and black streaks, but compared to the new one, it was impossible to "see through" as the filter parts had expanded.

Was this a premature change or is once a year enough - we are not high mileage drivers (12000km a year)

Thanks again
