Take it to the dealer and ask them what's the problem. Dealers in my area never lie about the true nature of a problem. After you obtain a quote for the repair, search nearby mechanics for better costs.
I personaly would just bite the bullet at the dealer. They always find other things to fix, but it's up to you whether you want them to do anything else. Since the dealer has to provide a warranty on their service for x days, they are less likely to break something else.
My '96 4Runner failed the smog test last year. I took it to a shop because my parents didn't trust the dealer. The shop wanted $1,500 to replace the CA catalizer (sp?). I took it to another shop and $400 later, they replaced the O2 detector and the car passed the smog.
I don't like mechanics. My experience with them has been very poor. I preffer to pay the extra $ at the dealer...
