Welcome to TN. That button is the shift lock override. In the event that your shifter is locked into park for any reason you can unlock it by sticking your key in there.

I was trying to revive my aunt's 1996 Toyota Corolla (which had a dead battery), and needed to push it out of its space to run jumper cables.

I was surprised to find out that the lockout was electronic and not mechanical, and that I couldn't shift with my foot on the brake and the ignition switch in the "run" position. I had to use the overide to get the car out of its space.

I now own that Corolla, and I'm in the process of getting it caught up on maintenance. My aunt maintained it well because she listened to my advice, but she did miss a few things. The car has 80,000 miles on it so I picked up belts, hoses, plugs, wires, cap rotor, fuel filter, and a transmission pan gasket (to drain the fluid, clean the strainer, and seal it back up).

Regards,
