95 corolla valve job ??

Hi,
I have a 1995 corolla with 113k miles. I don't believe it has had a
valve job before. Should I get it done?
I really don't know if it's noisy because I recently got it from a
family member and don't have a baseline for that.

Reading the haynes...it says I have to remove the intake camshaft.
Is that right??? seems kind of extensive for just a valve job. Anyone
know what they charge these days for the job?

Thanks

-joe

If you get it done, let us know if it makes a difference. I have a '95
Prizm (1.8L) with 198,000 miles and it still purrs.

Your car should not need a valve job with only 113k miles. On the other
hand, at that mileage, it wouldn't hurt to have the valve lash checked and
adjusted if necessary. There is a big difference between the cost of a
valve job, which requires removing the head, and a valve lash check, which
involves just removing the valve cover.

Re: 95 corolla valve job ?? (meant valve adjustment)

Ooops!!
Yes, I meant valve adjustment, not valve job.

Basically the car has a pretty bad idle when cold(1st start of the
morning), then settles down a bit in 5-10 minutes. It actually idles
worse in Neutral then in Drive so I'm thinking the motor mounts have
gone bad(hardened up rubber over time).

As a plan of attack, I was planning on adressing a few maintenance
items:
new plug wires
new fuel filter
new spark plugs
valve adjustment???
new motor mounts?
new thermostat - temperature only reads about 1/3. seems low.
shouldn't it be at 1/2? There is a leak between block and thermostat
housing, so I might as well put a new 180 deg thermostat in.

Re: 95 corolla valve job ??

sorry, I meant valve adjustement. But even for that, the haynes manual
said the intake cam needs to be removed if I read it correctly.

Stick to OEM.

Probably not needed unless you have driveability issues all the time.

Probably worth it.
[color=blue]

do this last becuase bad motor mounts tend to cause more problems in drive
than in neutral.

Get a new OEM thermostat and gasket. Pay attention to how the original
thermostat is oriented when you remove it. Clean up the block and
thermostat housing to get all the old gasket material off.

Replace the coolant (if it is sill Toyota red, stick to Toyota red).

New coolant and a thermostat may solve your rough idle problem.
