NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Mayor Ray Nagin on Friday proposed Las Vegas-style
gambling in the city's larger hotels as a way to revitalize New Orleans'
shattered economy after Hurricane Katrina.
"Now is the time for us to think out of the box. Now is the time for
some bold leadership, some decisive leadership," he said.
The plan - which would need the approval of the Louisiana Legislature -
calls for a large-scale gambling district along Canal Street. Nagin said
gambling should be allowed in hotels that have more than 500 rooms.
Video gambling machines are already allowed in roughly half of
Louisiana's 64 parishes, but there is only one full-scale casino in New
Orleans. The downtown casino, operated by Harrah's, has been closed
since shortly before Katrina hit, and the company has not given a
timetable for a reopening.
Also, three dockside riverboat casinos operate in the New Orleans area.
Nagin raised his proposal after Katrina virtually destroyed all 13
dockside casinos on the nearby Mississippi Gulf Coast. Mississippi
lawmakers have passed a bill allowing the casino operators to rebuild on
dry land.

Not only is he a Democrat, he can't count either. I just wonder if
any of the casino cash will make it into the city coffers? I wonder
if they are going to reopen the casinos on the river boat basin that
got a lot of the levee money?

Yeah, I wonder where all those billions of dollars we taxpayers are
going to give him will ultimately wind up....in a casino??
I'm all for helping them out, but for someone or body to come out
smelling like a rose and riding a disaster wave of money I'm not for.
It stinks.

A drive thru Atlantic City would be a good lesson to him...
I am much nearer (220 miles) to Reno. All you have to do even there
is to really take a good look at the social conditions. Gambling is
not the "magic bullet". The poor suffer most.
I have heard Atlantic City is a mess. New Orleans will be a mess
also.

Speaking of 'mess' is it true that the Gulf is a mess due to
pollution from the water pumped back into the Bay from N.O.? or
would that comparatively small amount not have much effect on
such a large body? I would tend to agree with this last thing.

The Gulf survived in great shape.
Neither NO or me peeing in it daily have hurt it a bit...

Half of it was already a huge dead zone before Katrina. No harm, no
foul I suppose.

I think its a stupid idea.
Notwithstanding my opinion, this is the sort of thing Republican
accountants should be good at. Since Bush is a true Conservative, why
not just support Nagin for the good of the country, and not get
involved with the local politics? Let the voters decide that -- but
give Nagin the money he needs to enforce his idea until the next
election.
