[OT] OT: OT

It appears some people's newsreaders are stripping the OT: from subject
headers when they reply to a post titled in that manner. I believe an
Outlook Express bug to be the main culprit in this case. The result of
this is that those who are making an effort to filter out all this
other noise we make are being forced to download and view messages that
they don't want.

Since in their haste the OE users don't notice this error occurring I
would like to suggest a different method of titling off-topic posts.

Instead of OT: perhaps [OT] or {OT} or even plain OT.

People blame OE for stripping OT, but that has never, *ever* happened to me.
I think it's something in the way certain peoples' computers are setup

OE strips the "OT" only if a colon immediately follows it, e.g. "OT:". It's
because it thinks the "OT:" is a foreign representation of "RE:", so it
replaces the "OT" with "RE" (or whatever it would be based on which language
is used by the one who is making the follow-up post). I've seen posts from
Europeans using non-English versions of OE that had follow-up posts with
subject titles starting with "SV:" instead of "RE:".

Ah - thanks - wondered why OE kept getting that rap

The first example I see for you is the thread titled OT: Thank God it's
finally over. Another is Simple Life Cancelled. Your newsreader has
done it many times, and yet has not done it sometimes. Look at some of
the other ones from Truckdude, Shark35, Art, Charles K., Dan J.S.,
FanJet, et. al.

HTM said it's the colon that causes that, so we should maybe drop the colon?
