I'm really close to buying either a Corolla or a
Camry. But the closer I get to making a decision, the
more I start thinking about the Honda Civic or Accord.
I plan on owning the car for 10 or 15 years. Of
the four, which do you think will be most mechanically
reliable with regard to the engine, automatic tranz,
suspension, etc.: Corolla, Civic, Camry, or Accord?

I have heard of both Honda and Camry transmissions failing at around 175,000
miles if they are not serviced properly. I have not heard that problem with
Corollas.

So corollas never fail, even if not serviced properly ? :-)

If you really want to keep the car for that long I would
take camry or accord. They will last longer than the
cheaper counterparts, and the cost of owning will be
pretty much the same spread over so many years.
Also - think about the quality of the experience you will
have with bigger, more comfortable cars like camry
or accord over cheaper and smaller civic/corolla.
For me the choice would be simple :-)

That might be your opinion....but I'm very happy with my '92 Corolla
Wagon. It is a comfortable as new and does not cost much to
maintain...plus it is very easy to load a kayak on....

What kind of statement is that?
No car 'never' fails.
Who in their right mind would not service a car properly....except the
gal that gripes about sludge? Charlene Blake...LOL

LOL! How old are you?
TOyota seems to be going after the aging Baby-Boomer market, whereas Honda
seems to be thinking a little younger.
I like the Matrix, but I also went to look at a Civic Coupe and an Accord
Coupe (I like 2 doors. I'm a big guy and bang my shoulders getting in and
out of 4-doors)
The Civic is a little more sporty, as is the Accord, than their Toyota
counterparts.
Another car I am considering is the Scion tC, sort of a cross between a
Celica and a Camry.

If they had not put the damned radio antenna where a kayak goes the tC
would be on my list...

IMO, Corolla and Civic will last just as long and be equally reliable with
proper care. I know people who have put as many miles on those cars as
have been put on Accords and Camrys. The 4-bangers, in particular, of all
4 cars are damn near indestructible.

You can also still find Civics and Accords made in Japan. You'll have to
hunt, but they are available.

The tC is a fun car to drive. The Corolla and Civic are more "fun" to drive
since they are more agile. If you want the family sedan, it would be the
Accord or Camry. Have you driven any of them? You'll also have to ask
yourself which one you enjoy driving more. I think Hondas are a little more
fun to drive, while Toyotas give a softer (hence smoother) ride. Can't go
wrong with the reliabiliy of the choices, but I tend to think the Toyotas
are a touch more reliable than Hondas. I've owned both, but my last 2 cars
were/are a Honda Prelude and Honda Accord. Not sure about the new Toyotas,
but you've got to make sure the timing belt/water pump gets changed on time
for the Hondas. Otherwise you're looking for trouble.

As far as I know, all Toyota and Honda 4-bangers currently in production
are chain-driven. The V6 engines are still belt-driven, however.

Either brand you will be happy. I would wait for the 07 Camry's because they
look like the Lexus IS...
