SPOKANE, Washington (Reuters) - Voters in Spokane, Washington, have
ousted their conservative mayor following newspaper reports that he
offered city jobs to young men in the hopes of having sex with them,
according to election results posted on Wednesday.
Sixty-five percent of voters in Washington's second-largest city voted
to recall Mayor James West in Tuesday's special election, according to
Spokane County's elections office.
Once the recall vote is certified in ten days, West will immediately
leave office. The president of Spokane's city council will become
interim mayor and the council will tap a new mayor to serve the
remaining two years of West's term.
At a press conference on Wednesday, West said he regretted some things
in his private life. "I am embarrassed by them, but nevertheless, they
are in my private life," West said.
A former deputy sheriff and Boy Scout leader, West, 54, had been a
prominent Republican political figure and leader in the state
legislature until quitting state politics to run for mayor in 2003.
In the legislature he had a reputation as a social conservative and
co-sponsored a bill which would have made unmarried sex between
teenagers a crime and another that would limited contact between gay
state employees and children.
Last spring, Spokane's daily newspaper, the Spokesman-Review, ran a
series of articles that said West had spent large amounts of time on
gay Web sites and quoted three young men who said they had communicated
over the Internet with him and had been offered city jobs or positions
by him.
