Blew away my crusty old RH8 config last night, and by this afternoon
I'm up and running with full blown Debian. rock solid so far.

I had a similar problem, in my case it was because I have my network
set up to assign static IP addresses... so all I had to do is go into
the manual configuration and put in the network info for my computer.

At first I typed 192.169.x.x by mistake (instead of 192.168.x.x) and
the entire installation went down... so I started over, corrected that,
and within three hours Debian had downloaded the entire operating
system over the internet, and here I am in KDE 3.3.

Still can't get my dvd's to play, but its only a matter of time.

connection do you have? A 300 baud acoustical coupler?

Come now Menhaden, don't be a moron. Its free, it never crashes, and
that was about 600 mb of data. Operating systems are preetty gosh durn
big nowadays.

Spokane Mayor Jim West says he doesn't plan to show up at City Hall for
his last day in office today.

Voters last week decided to remove West from office in a recall
election based on an allegation that he offered city jobs and perks to

The server may have a slow upload themselves. Other factors are
possible also, like many other users trying to download at the same
time from the Linux distributor.

Linux sucks. Mounting/unmounting drives is insane. The inability to
view common graphics/video files unless jumping through hoops makes it
very un-user friendly.

Not to mention that when one downloads an entire operating system, that's
about half a gigabyte to begin with. And if one includes updates and
optional features, that means even more data to download. Even at the
ISP's top download speed, 3 hours is realistic.

Actually, mounting and unmounting of drives can be done automatically in
the more recent flavours of Linux, and there are plenty of imaging/video
apps available that support most if not all formats.
