We've murdered many prisoners, actually.

And killed many more without a determination yet of whether it reaches
the level of murder.

A few dozen.

And we have done things far more horrible than putting panties on
their heads, such as conducting fake executions.

How would you feel if you thought you were being executed?

We grab people off streets, fly them to a former eastern block prison,
and tell them we can keep them there forever, that no one knows where
they are, that we can kill them and no one will be the wiser.

That's horrible. Think how you would feel. After a couple years.

And panties on your head may not strike you as horrible, but such
things DO strike others as genuinely horrible. Horror is dependent on
culture.

I saw an interview with a man in Iraq who was held in Abu Ghraib
prison first by Saddam and then by us. He said it was worse with us.
That with the Americans he WISHED they would kill him.

The photos we have seen are the milder ones. The Bush administration
has blocked release of others which those who have seen them say are
much worse. Lindsay Graham, for instance, says that the unreleased
photos are much worse.

And this was something that did not have to happen. Colin Powell told
those "at the highest level" that there were abuses in the prisons and
that if they were not corrected then a huge scandal could erupt.

And those at the table laughed. Made jokes. And did nothing.

And that's half the reason we lost the war in Iraq - Abu Ghraib.

The other half was our decision to be so brutal in Fallujah.

Our willingness to tolerate prison torture has cost us dearly.
