check engine light 94 tercel

Hi all,
The check engine light has been coming on intermittently for the last
few days. Pardon my stupidity, but if I go to Autozone I can get the
codes for what is causing it for free? Is this true? Hopefully it is
nothing major. I just replaced the clutch and my wallet is not in the
mood for anything else at the moment!
TIA
Matt

The '94 and the '95 were similar. Experience tell me if it's not an O2
sensor, it may be Low EGR flow, which is another way of syaing Low Vacuum
(in a nutshell. Your mileage may very, pleae consult local laws)

What I did with mine was to clean/replce the hoses. AutoZone will scan
your car for free, but the codes don't always come up with the right
thing. Find a Toyota dealer that charges .5 hours for a scan. The one I
worked for charged $99!!! but that is unusual.

How about a treatment with BG44K? Car has 121K. Might that possibly
fix the emissions problem?

Oh...you didn't say you had emission problems...

The only thing I ever trusted was Chevron Techron, available either in
Chevron gas or at parts stores. Try a couple bottles.

If you're having emission problems I would suspect the O2, but it could be
other things as well.

Here's what I did with my '95: open the glove box, and feel for the plugs
into the computer. MAKE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF!!!!!!! Unplug the Top
(IIRC) connector for about 30 seconds. (NOTE: This will CLEAR THE CODES!
If youy really want to find out what's going on, don't do this!)

Pulg the computer back in and start the car. The MIL will be off. On my
car, emissions went back down to prectically nothing and fuel economy went
up about 8 MPG...for 2 more starts. Then I had to do it all over again.
This was a last resort, since nobody could find anything wrong with the
car!!! Even 2 Toyota garages. This is NOT recommended however, since if
done wrong you can zap the computer, an $800 replacement, unless you can
find a similar model in a junk yard. Even then they're $100. I lucked out
and picked up an exact duplicate, color and all, for $400, but sold the
car beofre doing anything but replacing a slightly damaged door. The
'donor' car only had 60,000!!!!

Always wanted to pop a 4A-GE into that thing...would have made one hot
2-door Sedan!!!
