toyota corolla, uk

Hi there i have just brought a toyota corolla, 1.4 vvt-i 2005
i cannot seem to get the display (the console in the middle which tell me
the clock, and has all the audio information)
to come on, ive read the log book, which tells me to hold down the enter
button for 2 seconds (have done this, no luck) am thinking its probably a
fuse, but it seems a bit odd that in a year this would happen, any other
remedies to solve this?

Did you get any kind of warenty when you bought it? or did you buy
private?
A dealer might be able to tell you, and fix it if there is a fault, but
UK Toyota dealers are notoriously pricy.
