Transmission Issue

2000 Avalon
My transmission shifts normally during normal driving and is full of fluid
(no leaks). Anyhow, it does have a problem though. If I put my foot into it,
the engine will race but the transmission will not engage. The car continues
down the road but accelerates only slightly. I tried it today and about had
a heart attack when I glanced down at the tach and it was approaching six
grand. Ideas? Thanks.

Re: Transmission Issue

Well, you need to verify that the fluid is at the proper level (checked
while the car is running, warm, and on a level surface), and you need to
inspect the fluid condition. It should smell sweet and have a light red
color to it. But unless you really know what you are doing, I would seek
out a competent technician soon. Sounds like you have a serious friction
issue.

Re: Transmission Issue

I'm a pretty good wrencher but don't really have any experience with
automatics. The fluid is at the proper level but it is a light brown color.
I was going to get the fluid and filter changed and see what happens. Then,
if the problem doesn't go away, it's off to a mechanic. Thanks.
