Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates
for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and
city projects.
Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for
discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court
order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV
again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.
When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how
hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the
Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes
into the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat,
he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of
the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

I remember him from when I lived in Phoenix - I just love how hardened
criminals whine about how they're treated.

Of course this all ignores the millions of dollars the county has paid as the
result of various mistreatment lawsuits, even a couple of wrongful deaths when
they told as dying prisoner he was "faking it" and wouldn't let him see the
doctor. You could house and feed LOTS of prisoners for those millions ...

Hi,
I live in Phoenix and I think our sheriff Joe Arpaio is great. He was on
T.V. just tonite with his latest idea. He is going to start a new show
here to compete with american idol . Called Arizona Inmate. Even said he
might start his own radio station from the jail called KJOE, his has a
"vacancy " sign flashing above the tent city. A few weeks ago a bunch of
the inmates were complaining thet while they were in tent city with no
heat and no cooling and on dirt floors ,while stray dogs were sleeping on
mattreses in the air-conditioned and heated old jail downtown. Joe said he
thought that was okay because the dogs were not criminals . Then there was
the time that a local ostrich rancher gave Joe 500 pounds of ostrich meat.
He served it to the inmates. When they found out what it was the shit hit
the fan. Joe came on TV again and said,
Well, ostrich is not my first choice in meat either, but i'm not in jail,
and you have choice to eat or go hungry. Joe is in his 70's now and it
will be a sad day for me when he retires.

He used to be a coach in Springfield, MASS, his hometown.
Coffee is a privelidge. If you screw up, you get your coffee taken away.
He makes the inmates wear pink underwear.
He reads them a 'bedtime story' over the CCTV system every night.
