02 Sienna brake noise (rear)

I have taken this to the dealer twice and thay charge me $70 dollar a
pop. They put a break cleaner and lube kit to lower the noise. It works for
a week then comes back. I think the drum assemblies needs to be change.
What are your thoughts?....Paul

If you are talking about a high-pitched noise from the rear, then yeah,
Toyota has changed the drums for your van.
Another thing you can try that I've had luck with sometimes is placing a
WHOLE bunch of adhesive wheel weights on the backing plates of both drums.
I mean load them up. The extra weight should get rid of the vibration.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but thats what we were doing for
our customers before Toyota changed the drums.

Would peening the backing plates with a swing press/BFH so that it doesn't
resonate work? That was an effective method to stop heat shield vibrations.

Well, I don't think you'd wanna whack the backing plates with a hammer.
That is where the shoes rest, and you'd want it to be flat, otherwise you
could have other strange noises as well. We've had pretty good luck just
loading them up with weight.

Doh! I was ignoring the part about the drums and thinking about the backing
plate for disk brakes! Forget what I said about the "audio adjustment!"

Is a recall out on this or will I have to suck it up and pay to have the
drums changed out?....Paul
