VVT-i cam conversion?

Does anyone know if you can replace older Toyota cams with the new VVT-i
cams instead of replacing the entire engine? This refers specifically to
the 2.7L 4-cylinder in Tacomas. Did they change the whole engine
configuration or just the cams, plus controllers?

The cams will have different profiles, the head will contain mechanisms
for changing the timing of the cams. If you're looking to throw in any
old cams to replace a damaged one it *may* work. If you're looking for
performance gains you wont get any, tis a totally different setup that
requires all the controller hardware and mechanisms, and a different
head.
