You may have survived, but think of all the other people who were in
danger from your innards getting splattered on them if you had a wreck.
You put them in unneeded danger by not having DRLs because they
wouldn't be able to see you from a mile away as they were gabbing on
their cellular phones.
By you not having ABS they could have been smashed to bits since you
wouldn't be able to stop before they hit you.
No air bags for you means higher insurance costs for them.
I hope you realize how selfish you have been by not having all these
safety devices installed retroactively in your vehicle.

If they were readily available options but not standard equipment, I'd pay
extra for ABS and side airbags.
If you're thinking these things should be optional, well, I'd agree with
you. But I'd want them readily available because I see value in them. My
experience trying to get side airbags on our '01 suggests that "readily
available" isn't the case for optional safety items.
Anyway, where'd you go? I enjoy long driving trips.

Started out in Florida...
Drove to my brother's house outside Charlotte NC.
Then took almost the full Blue Ridge Parkway north.
Onto Mass to take my wife away from her elder parents and a
short stay on the coast of Maine (near Perkins Cove along the
Marginal Way).
On the way back a stop in NJ to visit my Air Force son.
Broke in my new Canon EOS 5D digital SLR. What a JOY!

Sounds very pleasant. Esepcially the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's been a long
time since I went there. Over 35 years.
Little cold for the Coast of Maine, though.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a national treasure. Very pleasant.
This time of the year there is hardly any traffic.
Spring is just coming to the parkway.
Maine is a bit cool....but if you have a fireplace in your room....it
ain't bad....LOL

Scott, do you see the sense in this?, by your statement you do
agree with us that it's safer to use your lights but you object
to being 'forced' to use them.
That's fine but IMO the traffic law needs to be there to force
those who aren't smart enough to know that they increase safety
to use them....

As a matter of principal I am against this idea of forcing upon all of
these petty laws which includes headlights and helmets. Where does it
end, in the bedroom or beyond?

I agree with you that DRL's and Airbags are a waste. They should be
optional.
ABS should be optional too but I'd gladly pay for it.

No, of course not, it has to be sensible and reasonable, using
your rationale there should be NO rules at all (which is silly of
course), because everyone has a different 'pain threshold'.

Lesser evil than the financial burdens we all would be forced to pay without them.

Yes, that IS one argument for sure but perhaps the counter to
that would be for the insurance companies to advertise that if
you're involved in an accident 'while not wearing your belts'
then you aren't covered, just as you are not when over the blood
alcohol level limit. Apparently life insurance companies won't
cover you if you commit suicide I believe (I haven't tried it
mind you!)

Life Insurance companies pay for suicide....you just have to wait two
years after policy issue before doing yourself in.
