I wrote: "...which is why I recommended that people stick to conventional
oil if they are going to change it every 3,000 or 4,000 miles..." I did
not write that conventional oil is more cost effective than synthetic oil.
The qualifier to my recommendation is "if they are going to change it every
3,000 or 4,000 miles..."
The reason that I do not recommend changing oil and filter only once a year
or 25,000 miles is that the owner must follow factory recommended
maintenance to keep the warranty valid, and Toyota's factory recommended
maintenance schedule does not have a provision for longer intervals if
better materials or oil is used. In other words, if the engine blows up at
20,000 miles and Toyota sees that it has had only 1 oil change, the repair
will not be covered by Toyota's warranty so now the customer has to go to
the place that changed or sold the oil and filter for warranty coverage. My
experience with customers trying to get oil companies to provide warranty
coverage has not been good so I do not provide advice that points people in
that direction.
I have no doubt that there are filters and lubricants that can provide
protection that exceeds what OEM products provide, but if something goes
wrong, I do not wish to be in a position of people coming to me saying "but
you told me..." I guess that is the factory rep still ingrained in me.
