For all you people that buy SUVs because they are safe....
Venice SUV driver ejected, injured in accident on I-75
SARASOTA COUNTY -- A Venice man who swerved to avoid rear-ending a car
on Interstate 75 on Thursday morning was seriously injured when he was
thrown from his car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Scott Kamrath, 57, was ejected onto the road from his sport utility
vehicle as he tried to regain control of it, the FHP said.
The SUV hit a guardrail and spun out onto the shoulder. The SUV spun
out again when Kamrath tried to re-enter the road from the shoulder,
the FHP said.
The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. under the
overpass at State Road 681 near Nokomis.
Kamrath was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg in
serious condition.
Traffic lanes were closed so a rescue helicopter could land on the
interstate, an FHP spokesman said.
That is what happens when one does not wear the set belt.

This happened because the swerving action was too much for the vehicle to
handle. He should have been driving a sports car.

That is the problem.
In my observations.... most SUV drivers think they have sports
cars....

It is unfortunate, but most drivers overdrive their abilities regardless
of the type of vehicle, especially on slippery roads and otherwise poor
driving conditions. They (we) follow too close, drive too fast for
conditions and over correct. The SUV may be less forgiving and the
civic type may be more forgiving.

LOL! I'd stop wearing my seatbelt if I had to reach for my wallet so often.

They are safer than a lot of smaller cars in the same situation. They
also allow greater field of vision, better preventative action to be
taken in advance of accidents. But then that also assumes the driver is
half decent, the over-riding factor in almost every accident.
The thing is that people generalise SUVs into one box and say they are
all unsafe, dirty and inefficient. You cant do that across the range.
Sure a lot of american SUVs are oversized, under-performing and
dangerously bad at cornering and stopping. But a lot of japanese ones
are smaller, more efficient and very good at handling, assuming the
driver realises its an SUV and doesnt try to drive it like they would a
car. You wouldnt try to handle a 747 the way you'd throw a Harrier
around, but it doesnt mean its less safe.
As for inefficient, I know of at least two SUVs that get more to the
gallon than my two previous medium sized family saloons with average
engine size.
And all in all the impact safety of cars is closer related to the age
of the vehicle than it is to the size.
Whatever the case, to be ejected from the vehicle you'd have to not be
wearing your seatbelt. Which infers the driver is an idiot to start
with, hardly a fair case to try now is it?

They are NOT.....
They inspire the 'thought' that you are safe.....so many drivers
become total assholes in how they drive.

In my experience....most (not all) SUV drivers take the attitude that
they can't be hurt...which is NOT true...
