A deadly traffic accident Monday involving U.S. troops sparked the worst
riot in the Afghan capital since the fall of the Taliban. At least eight
people were killed and 107 injured, an official said.

Were winning over there whether you like it or not, Art. It's kind of
obvious when the bad news you have to report is a traffic accident. This
traffic accident certainly is'nt going to derail everything.
According to the NHTSA 120 Americans, on average, die in automotive
accidents in the US every day of the year. That is not on the front page or
on the nightly news

I guess you 2 can't read. Yes, there was an accident and that made everyone
decide to riot.

Nobody is denying or downplaying the riots but I am saying that it's all
because of a traffic accident and so not much will come of it.
Asking "Are we winning the peace?" as it relates to this is an unfair,
biased, cheap shot.

Maybe you should read the article again. It was an anti-American riot. We
apparently are not winning the peace.

Actually a traffic accident leading to that result IS on the front page
or nightly news. Usually it is a fender bender in heavy fog with a 100
car pileup behind it. It only happens every few years, so it is front
page news when it happens.

Traffic accidents, including those that don't involve loss of life, are
commonplace TV news. Let me rephrase that, they are a staple of TV news.
And, of course, they are accidents. And the degree to which the public
safety should be protected and enhanced is an interesting matter of public
debate, in which the major media are often involved reporting the stories.
The War in Iraq, of course, is different and your comparsion to accident
reporting is specious. The loss of life there is not accidental or
incidental, it is a direct result of our invasion. As such, it will
necessarily hold a different place in news reporting.

Whenever 120 Americans die whatever the reason, it should be big news,
whether it happens in one accident 120. The fact is accidental deaths,
since 9/11, in our military forces have far exceeded the number that have
died in the actual defense of our county over the same time period. If the
media could put the blame for those accidental deaths on the administration,
you can bet they would be on the front page or on the nightly news.
The front pages would not have been large enough and the nightly news not
long enough to report all of the deaths that occurred daily during WWII.
The profound difference is the fact the deaths in that war would not even
have been published daily so as not to hurt are war effort, as it is today..

Art, I know you're a guy who likes polls. The Afghan polls have been very
pro American since they started polling and still are.
The demonstrators were a tiny minority of youths who according to reports
are being influenced by outside agitators. It was also reported that the
riots were an excuse to loot and vandalize. Of course the initial anger
was from mistakingly thinking the American truck deliberately rammed into
traffic.(It was brake failure.)
Tuesday,(the day after) "peacefull, no violence" says deputy police chief
of Kabul.
85% of Afghanis' view U.S. Military presence as a good thing.
83% think their Country is headed in the right direction.
93% approve of President Karzais.
88% view the Taliban unfavorably.
82% say overthrowing the Taliban was a good thing.
90% view Bin Laden unfavorably, with 75% of that being VERY unfavorably.

It seems to me that we haven't spent enuf effort getting Afghanistan on the
right track. Our resources have been diverted to the mess in Iraq.
Fortunately I heard that the UN will be doubling its forces in Afghanistan.
That is a start.

NATO is doubling their troops.
Iraq has nothing to do with it.
