Make sure that there is nothing resting on the brake pedal, like a floor
mat.
Check to make sure that the brake light switch is operating properly.

Have someone stand behind the car while you pull up on the brake pedal. If
the lights go off, you know it's the pedal not being properly supported or
something is interfering with its free motion (in my experience it's usually
the government's fault when free motion is restricted, but you'll want to do
your own analysis for sure.)
Check the pivot hinge for grime and grit of nothing else is visibly blocking
the pedal from returning. Hopefully some WD-40 or CRC spray lube on that
hinge will fix it right up. Good luck.

I believe the problem is a plastic spacer on the brake light switch.
Same thing happened to my '92 Corolla Wagon. I pulled into the Toy
dealer and the service writer got the part and installed it at no
charge.
The spacer (if that is the right term) is located on the brake pedal
almost out of sight connecting the pedal to the brake light switch.
I'm sure one of the MDTs will get on here and correct my nomenclature.

BTW, if I had to guess, "spacer" is what you would find in the parts
catalog.

Well the parts guy said .... 'we don't have the part in stock' and
the writer said BS under his breath and went back in the back and
found one.
That service writer has since moved to the mountains of Tennessee. I
miss that kind of competence...

Hey its probably youre brake light switch which is located
under the dash connected to the brake pedal which is sticking try adjusting
it and if the lights come off you will
need to replace it as it will more than likely keep reoccuring
