Re: toyota heads replacement

Tony,

Are you sure its coming from the heads?

I have an 86 4Runner with a 22RE engine (injected). I have come to
learn that a very common problem with Toyota's is the timing chain.
(Yes, its a chain and not a belt, but possibly not the case for ALL
toyota engines). Anyway, what happens is after a few miles (100k or so)
the timing chain gets so loose by the tensioner either falling off and
dropping into the oil pan or the chain stretching that the chain begins
to tap on and wear a groove through the chain cover. Then, once a
groove goes all the way through the cover, the engine coolant flows
freely into the oilpan and does a number on your engine. The noise
could very well be that. Especially if its accomanied by any of the
following: a slight off-timing during startup/shutdown or acceleration
and/or a "dieseling" during shutdown.

I'm having my whole engine rebuilt (for other issues too) and I can
recommend a great mechanic in Long Beach if you need one.

Peace,

Kyler

What kind of SR5? Since you say it has 16 valves, I'm assuming it is not
the 20R or 22R block.

Is it a Corolla?

You mentioned that you saw metal chips on the valves, and that is often an
indication of a lack of lubrication. Besides head replacement, you should
take measure oil pressure at idle and at higher RPM, drop the oil pan and
clean it out, and also disassemble the oil pump to make sure it is good.

If your vehicle is 1991 model year or later, you can go to
techinfo.toyota.com for online access or you can use a Haynes, Chilton, or
Mitchell manual. Removing the head is definitely something you will need
specifications and step-by-step instructions for.

You will need a selection of metric sockets and combination wrenches; a
torque wrench, a gasket scraper, straightedge, and a special service tool to
R&R the valve shims.

For parts, you will need a head gasket set that includes the head gasket,
intake and exhaust gasket, etc; new head bolts, valve stem guides, camshaft
bearings, and a shim collection. If you are going to take the head off, you
might as well replace the timing chain/belt. Depending on the condition of
the camshafts, you may need new camshafts. You will need to determine the
source of the metal chips. If it is babbit material, you may need a new
head.
