How can one stop the OT postings here

I'm interested in all Toyota matters, but am getting tired of even
downloading the flood of OT postings in this newsgroup. These no-nothing
spammers (for some reason mostly political conservatives) spoil the pleasure
for the rest of us and give conservative causes a bad name in the process.
I've read someplace that there is often simple filter method in browsers (MS
Outlook Express) to block undesirable posters and would apprecitiate
relevant advise.
Thank you

At the risk of becoming a blocked poster I will give you some advise.
In OE go to Tools--Message Rules--News and create filters based upon
the Conditions and Actions available. You ought to be able to filter
out quite a bit of noise if you use the "Where the From line" condition.

Be wary of using the Subject line choice for OT messages because you
will also filter out messages that have toyOTa in the header. Some
people create OT messages with OT: or {OT} or [OT] and those should be
safe to filter on.

Good luck

In the mean time feel free to get off the net and sell your computer. Sure,
there are topics that groups are supposed to be about, but people still have
the freedom to post off topic as much as they wish. This is especially true
of non-moderated groups as I believe this one is. I do believe that calling
what few posts that are off topic a "flood" is a bit of an exageration.
While I'm sure off-topic posts are not meant to be something that causes so
much anxeity for people, it's something that is a evil that one will always
come upon on the net.

You forgot to put OT in front of the subject, suppose to do that you
know for subjects that don't have anything to do with Toyota.

Second part is you can't stop the OT postings. Usenet is a wide, wild
at times old cyber space. No point in fighting it. You most likely
have a filter which you can use quite effectively, but I know your pain.
I started out the same as you, frustrated, but I quickly found there was
nothing I could do but join them or use my filter which I do on some
occasions.

Cheers

The fundamental problem is that Toyotas are too stinkin' reliable.
Consequently, we can't trade sob stories about our Toyota problems to keep
the newsgroup busy. Without OT postings, the newsgroup would die. Nobody
wants that.

Luckily, these fine Toyotas can be appreciated by people of widely varying
political persuasions. Consequently, we have found that we have other
things to fight - excuse me - talk about. Also, sometimes, we get really
good jokes.

It keeps us off the streets and out of trouble and is probably a good thing
overall. If you can't stand it, check one of the microsoft...outlook...
newsgroups and ask questions about using your Outlook/OutlookExpress
filtering capabilities there but I warn you OE starts to look confusing when
some things get filtered and others don't and you still wait while the
headers are downloaded and thrown away (or concealed, I don't use the
feature, so I don't know which happens). Or join a web-based group that's
moderated (like Toyotas_Only on Yahoo) but they have way less traffic and,
as far as I can tell, less fun per megabyte.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go trade abuse with some seriously
deluded NeoCons.

As the others have said, you can use your filters for OE, but you can also
either use 'mark posts from (frequentOTpostersnamehere) read' or killfile
that individual. I have mine set to killfile known trolls, and I have my
own posts marked read automatically. However, if you killfile certain
individuals, you'll miss a lot of info you may want. There is really no way
to escape off-topic posts on unmoderated Usenet, but you can certainly stem
the tide. Personally, OT posts have never bothered me, *unless* they're not
marked as such, deliberately, as some trolls will do.

And as someone said (again, since we get this complaint a lot), the cars are
so damned reliable, they don't leave us much to talk about.

Natalie

I don't use OE, but I just thought I'd pop in to second your opinion.

I've never seen such a flood of purely political (and therefore OT)
articles in any other newsgroup outside of the tom.clancy newsgroups.
Certainly I've never seen this in Honda newsgroups, for example.

Some people think that the world cares what they think, so they post it
anywhere. No doubt they spend their days searching the net for this
stuff and when they see a thread, they just post to it indiscriminately.
That's the only explanation I can offer.

Anyway, I use a newsreader that does support killing authors, and I use
it liberally (pun intended, I guess) in this newsgroup. Whenever I see
a thread such as you describe, I just killfile the author. Period. It
doesn't matter if he posts other things. I never see him again.

A few times a week I find new people that sneak in. I don't hesitate to
killfile them. I never see them, and the newsgroup is incredibly more
useful that way.

It would seem so simple to just not look at things you're not
interested in be it {OT} or constipation. to call anyone a
"no-nothing" (know-nothing) that doesn't know how to use a newsreader
is kind of an oxymoron anyhow.

It is a choice to read OT posts. No one makes you click on any of
them.

The fact that they are OT should mean something....even to
liberals...LOL
