Toyota has always been willing to slow or stop production to highlight
and fix problems as they occur and not "inspect them out" of the
finished product. That is the heart of the philosophy behind
just-in-time manufacturing that has made them so successfull and which
they have been practicing and refining for 30 years or more. Contrast
that to manufacturers who send their products out the door before they
are ready (i.e. the Focus).

this article makes it clear that Toyota's quality is improving but the
number of recalls has doubled between 2004 and 2005 and there's
evidence of slipping quality control as Toyota strives to produce more
cars. On the other hand, a lot of the recalls are for cars more than a
few years old showing Toyota is using repair data to discover latent
defects.
My personal experience with Toyota solutions for defects (transmission)
is excellent, much better than Honda.

Actually, Honda has done quite a bit with their V6 tranny struggles too;
they've extended warranties and issued recalls (depending on the tranny).
Unlike Ford and Crapsler, who did nothing.
But as has been said before, the number of Toyota recalls may be on the
rise, but it only shows that they are committed to fixing the problems.
Again, unlike the big 3.
If you consider recalls as a committment to fix problems, clearly GM and
Ford are the world leaders.

the focus isnt a bad car, i own one.
the problem is the mexican labor, some foci were put together by morons
and others were put together on a better shift.
mine hasnt had anything but a fuel pump replaced and it sure as heck
aint left me stranded like a chevy or a dodge or even a taurus would
lol.
while its no yota, it aint a bad car if ya get a good one, the main
focus problem is electrical fires and the dealer can check your wires
and replace them for free.
the focus wasnt sent out the door before it was ready but have you ever
driven a newer land rover, them things should come from the dealership
with a toolset and an engine left.

A friend has a Focus he bought used. One heck of a fun car to drive even
though the reviewers claim it is somewhat dated.

Despite its problems, the Focus has consistently made "best of" lists in
its class ... but I can remember reading that it is also the most
recalled vehicle in its class. Still, the Focus compares favorably to
the Toyota Corolla, which is not exactly outstanding in ANY respect.
IMHO The new Honda Civic easily trumps both. XY

Up here in Ohio they salt the roads, so Toyotas rust before they die
mechanically. :-(
The Ford Focus is a little shitbox. I don't know how they can sell
them, unless they're really inexpensive or something.
The Corolla is far better than the Focus. The only Ford product I
would even consider is a pickup truck, and I'm not sure they'll even
have that market for long.
Hondas are nice, but I'm not so sure they "trump" Toyotas. I think
they're pretty close in terms of quality.

That's the problem in the nation's snowbelts - the road salt eats the body
well before the car dies a natural death.

I know nothing about them, so checked an old ('05) new car (that sounds like
an oxymoron, although it isn't!) review mag I still had hanging around; it
gave generally good marks for the Focus; as compared w/ the Corolla it was
littler & the gas mileage wasn't as good as the Corolla's. In other aspects
they appeared to be about equal, customer satisfaction-wise. Price-wise, the
Focus ranged a little less, not that much.

I really think with the Hondas & Toyotas that it's a toss-up re: quality &
reliability - that it just comes down to personal preferences.

If it came from Hermosillo, the probably likely wasn't Mexican labor
but Ford design and production, and for the old Escort Hermosillo
actually had better quality than its U.S. factories.
Tribune Newspapers headline 8/24/ 06; "Toyota stumbles on quality" Byline;
Toyota shares fall with latest recall.of nearly a half million Siennas.
Toyota is having increasing quality control problems as sales ramp up. The
Sienna recall on top of the investigation that Toyota tried to cover up a
known steering problem, on nearly a million vehicles, is leading to the
delay of some new models. Surprise surprise, dare we say that the king has
no cloths? Toyota makes some that are not up to snuff on occasion, just
like every other manufacture, not better no worse. ;)

Guess I had better try to buy my old Escort back....the one that
burned...
Scott, you haven't bought a new Toyota in years. How would you know
anything about current quality.
