I was driving along at about 55 today, when my 2000 Echo suddenly felt
'cold', as though it hadn't really warmed up yet. Worse, I could hear the
engine revving really high. As you know, Echoes don't have gawddamn
tachometers, so I won't know how overworked the car is until it hits the red
zone.
It really had trouble accelerating. It was fine on my way out, but on the
way back, this crap started. It also did the same thing at lower speeds,
almost like I had it in low gear without knowing it. (I checked).
*sigh*
Natalie, probably going to fork over more $$$

Echo is that a Toyota?
How many miles on the...? You have to provide more information
Air filter, gas? Hard to say. Like a doctor trying to diagnose a
patient from 3000 miles away via a phone.

I could use a little more info... I am assuming that the engine was warmed
up by the time you got up to highway speeds, but what was the temperature
gauge reading? Also, check the transmission fluid level, and let us know
what color it is. Is it kind of brownish or black or is it a dirty red?
Next time it happens, try shifting the transmission down 1 gear and see if
the engine speeds up or stays the same. This may tell us if the
transmission is shifting properly. I searched tecchnical service bulletin
headings, and there is one on identifying shift solenoids. A bad shift
solenoid could cause the transmission to select the incorrect gear.
