1992 Tercel hood release

I have a '92 Tercel with a broken hood release. Any ideas on how to
fix that without shelling out $130?

It depends on what is broken. Did the cable break somewhere between the
lever under the dashboard and the release mechanism? Did the release lever
break? Does pulling the lever not produce any results or does the lever
pull without any resistance?

In any case, you may be able to unbolt the hood latch from underneath the
vehicle and with a very long extension for a ratchet.
