Re: IM ASKING FOR DONATIONS FOR HEART SURGERY

It's the "Studebaker XUV", built on a Ford F-350 platform if I remember
right. I don't know if any production ones were actually built.

It's for people who think a Hummer is just too wimpy <G>

Re: IM ASKING FOR DONATIONS FOR HEART SURGERY

Most of us on the NG (US dweller, that is) see Mexican-built cars
everyday.

The last VW bugs were built in Mexico, too, IIRC..

Ya, but if your history serves you, you will remember that Studebaker made
their fame and fortune building Conestoga wagons in the 1800's, and
sucessfully (for a while) made the switch to the auto business, first
building custom bodies for other vehicle manufacturers, and then building
cars all (or mostly) by themselves. They did have some help in the Engine
bay a few times during their lifetime...

I used to see Avantis driving around during the time I was in High
School. I could never decide whether I liked them or not. :-)

Re: IM ASKING FOR DONATIONS FOR HEART SURGERY

Not quite.

They started building cars in 1902 (electric ones) and shortly after
that made the switch to gas power. Studebaker was the only one of the
big wagon manufacturers to survive the transition to automobiles.

The only "help" they had in the engine bay was in the 56 Golden Hawk
with the Packard V8 and in 65 and 66 with the "Mckinnon" engines used
after the South Bend engine plant was shut down.

Yes, they only succeeded in the auto business "for a while", but that
was for over 60 years and all told they lasted for 113 years.

It remains to be seen if Ford, Chrysler or GM will last as long.

Well, I was being a little facetious! ;)

Yeah, they were around for quite a while! I will have to look at the Wiki
entry, because I'm pretty sure for a while they were a 'Coach builder' for
companies such as Packard and Deusenberg that didn't make their own bodies.

I think that there were several cases of taking over other cars that
had been designed and built, at least in prototype or limited
production form, by others.
I think this one would have trouble proving that all Electric, EMF and
Flanders and the first Rocknes were without quite a bit of outside
influence.
Obviously, we should exclude designing components of cars around
outside parts, to some extent.

I have never heard of a Packard, Duesenburg, or other non-Studebaker auto
which used a Studebaker-built custom body.

I'd like to thank all of you for turning another bullshit scam into a
really interesting history of Studebakers. Good on ya! And I'm NOT being
facetious. Kept me entertained for 5 minutes or so anyway. :-)

Actually, I'll take a Hawk. Or that '39 Coupe that looked like a cross
between a Ford and a Willy's!
