If you feel confidant than you may be able to do it. I know of a guy who had
the same problem in a corolla
he had to lower the box a bit to get the housing off but he did it. All he
had to do was change the bearings at the end of the shafts to fix the
problem.

Ray, Nick and Hachi,
Thank You for your replies. I guess my course of action is to first try it
with the tranny in the car, and then when things get too difficult, go ahead
and pull it out. Or I guess I could just get a shift knob with the a
4-speed pattern engraved in it instead of the present 5-speed one and trade
it off.<g> Only kidding.

I've also seen people use bungee cords to keep the shifter in place ;-)
