What do you think?

Do you think you would get a better deal if you negotiated one car by
yourself or got together with five others and negotiated five cars with

the same dealer?

That would be five cars for six people, how would you split them up?

Do you seriously think that the 5 other people will allow 1 person to
negotiate what they are going to pay for their cars and those people will
not each try to haggle their own deal?

If the 5 others and you are each going to negotiate their own deal, then
what difference would it make to the dealer if he negotiates with you and
your 5 friends separately for 6 cars or if he negotiates with 6 people
separately for 6 cars?

You might be surprised what sales managers will do at the end of the month,
especially if 5 people sit down with checkbooks and play the "put the
jackets back on and walk out" game.

During my time working for an automaker, I only worked with around 100
different sales managers - less than 10% of the sales manager population for
that brand. Within the small circle of sales managers I worked with, they
were all professionals in the car business, and none were promoted to sales
manager because they could sell a bunch of cars at a loss or at minimal
profit.

While anything is possible, I assert the likelihood that someone who:
- is doing research on the internet to buy a car or,
- who has bought 100 cars in his lifetime or,
- who reads consumer reports or,
- who has a relative in the car business or,
- who subscribes to 10 different auto magazines or,
- all of the above
is going to convince a professional sales manager that it is better to lose
a lot of money on a lot of cars than to lose a little money on 1 car at a
time is pretty slim.

Re: What do you think?

I agree with Joe, a sales manager will give his right arm to strike a
deal where he can score 5 cars together.

How many 1-armed sales managers have you seen?

There is a huge difference between negotiating with 1 person who purchases
and pays for 5 cars and negotiating with 5 people for 5 cars.

If 1 person negotiates and writes a check for 5 cars, that person will get a
good deal.

If 5 people walk in and each wants to negotiate his or her best deal that is
5 times the work for the dealership.

Think about this scenario from the buyer's point of view: Let's say Joe,
mbbs, Tom, Dick, and Harry walk into a dealership together and tell the
sales manager that if they do not all get a great deal, they will all walk.
Joe, mbbs, Tom, and Dick all want Camrys and Harry wants a Tundra. The
dealer has a 30 day supply of Camrys and a 90 day supply of Tundras so he
shows Harry the invoice for the Tundra and tells Harry that he can have the
Tundra for $800 under invoice because it is the end of the model year and
he'll pass all incentives on to Harry, but the other 4 guys only get $800
off of MSRP on their new Camrys so they want to walk. At the next
dealership, the 4 guys who want Camrys get $825 off of MSRP but Harry has to
pay invoice for his Tundra because the dealers is not in the same incentive
bracket. Do you think Harry will pay more for his Tundra so his 4 friends
will get a break on Camrys?

Who said anything about losing money?

I had to play the game in 1982, when trying to buy a Toyota Tercel. The
dealership advertised what I knew to be a good price, compared to other
dealers in the NY/NJ metro area. I walked in with a bank check for the ad
price, and said "I know there's tax & a few other charges, so I'll stop back
with actual green cash tomorrow or the next day, so tell me how much to
bring". They had a bunch of Tercels on the lot - all I needed to do was pick
a color and sign the papers. No trade in, no other complications.
Translation: Salesman could've sold a car in 8.3 minutes. But no. He said I
couldn't have the car until they installed body molding, a basic radio, and
other crap. I told him I worked for a place that installed all these things,
so no thanks, I'll just take the car.

In the ensuing 90 minutes, I spoke to 3 different "sales managers", each
with a bigger cigar and a smaller brain than the last. I put the coat on 5
times before these idiots finally said "Oh! So, you just want the car as
is?"

oh man, they never run out of ways to annoy you!
If I got such a call, I'd tell the salesman "No, sorry, you had your
chance...bye. ...Unless you'd like to come pick me up and drive me to the
dealership (and home again if I don't like the deal). How does that
sound?"

I recall once many years ago when I was looking at a used car, the salesman
wanted me to put a deposit on it to hold it... It was a common as dirt
automobile, of which there were probably 1000 similar examples in a 25 mile
radius.
I looked him in the eye and said "Pal, that's like a grocer wanting me to
put a deposit on a quart of milk so it doesn't get away!" He got the
point.

My favorite car sale story is about the guy who nailed down his deal, and
crowed to the sales manager that he'd really screwed him.
The sales manager asked him when he'd bought his last car. The buyer said
it was about 4 1/2 years before.
The sales manager smiled and said "So you buy a car every four and a half
years. I sell 65 to 70 cars a WEEK. ................and you think YOU
screwed ME?"[color=blue]

So you work for a losing car company!
OK you don't need to reveal which one, it is only a 1 out of 2.5 guess.

They would charge too much for those extras.
They have to make money somehow.

If the five cars were identical, or almost so you may get a dollars off.
IMO it's not worth the confusion in the offer room, having 5 buyers
chuckling away.

Losing money has more than one definition. They didn't realize what their
time was worth. They could've sold me a car, with no haggling at all, in
however long it takes to do the paperwork. That time is minimal if there's
no trade-in. They could've moved on to the next customer in what - 10 or 20
minutes?

When I was in the audio business, customers would sometimes walk in and the
first thing out of their mouts was "Do you have a pair of Bose 901 speakers
in stock?" We all knew those speakers sounded awful, and that you could buy
something better for half the price. But, we quickly learned to ask just one
or two questions to determine if the customer was a Bose robot - someone who
wants only those speakers and will not be reasoned with. At that moment, the
thing to do was shut up and let them buy the speakers. Both the store and
the salesmen made out like bandits selling them. Move on to the next
customer.

To paraphrase, I said "...the likelihood that someone...is going to convince
a professional sales manager that it is better to lose a lot of money on a
lot of cars than to lose a little money on 1 car at a time is pretty slim."
How does that translate to "losing car company?" BTW, I used to work for
the automaker, not for a dealership. Far from being a "losing car company,"
that automaker is the most profitable automaker in the world.
