You hooked the cables up properly, right?

How old is the battery? it may be time for a replacement.

When battery is totally drained by leaving the lights on, you'll need to
charge the battery with a battery charger. Simply trying to jump-start the
car wont do and you can't expect the alternator to fully charge a drained
battery.
