Check the sight glass on the side of the carburetor to make sure the fuel
level in the bowl is even with the notches on the side of the glass. If
fuel is leaking out of the bowl into the manifold, it could cause backfiring
and the flames your friend is describing. Check the engine oil to see if
it is contaminated with fuel.
Incorrect cam timing could also cause flames out of the air box, although
that is not the usual symptom.
