A bad throttle position sensor would not cause the problems you are
describing.

Some things to check that might cause those problems:

clogged air filter
crack or hole in the black plastic intake tube between the air filter and
throttle body
vacuum leak
incorrect ignition timing
worn or incorrect spark plugs
bad spark plug wires
worn or incorrect rotor or distributor cap
clogged idle speed control valve
clogged fuel injector(s)

Hi. I have a 1986 Camry with a 2SE 2.0L engine, and the idle sometimes drops (surges) 300 - 400 RPM, sounding like it wants to quit almost. If the idle control valve is clogged, is it serviceable or does it need replacing?
I am also looking at buying a 90 - 92 Camry. Are both the I4 and V6 engines DOHC? I have a motorbike with DOHC, and valve (shim) adjustment is a major operation. Do both these engines use shims, and do you have to take the cams out to replace the shims? I know some engines you do, and some you don't.
