OT: Soldiers Face Neglect, Frustration At Army's Top Medical Facility
And W just slashed funding to the VA. Wake up! The current
administration is not republican. Talk about not supporting the
troops.
Soldiers Face Neglect, Frustration At Army's Top Medical Facility
By Dana Priest and Anne Hull

Sunday, February 18, 2007; A01
Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan's room, part of the wall
is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the
wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see
the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire
building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy
carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up
cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.
This is the world of Building 18, not the kind of place where Duncan
expected to recover when he was evacuated to Walter Reed Army Medical
Center from Iraq last February with a broken neck and a shredded left
ear, nearly dead from blood loss. But the old lodge, just outside the
gates of the hospital and five miles up the road from the White House,
has housed hundreds of maimed soldiers recuperating from injuries
suffered in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sounds like business as usual for neocon republicans - love the fetus
hate the child; love the soldier, hate the vet, especially the wounded
combat vet.

To understand the situation, the neocons would have to actually visit some
of the messes they've created. I understand that better body armor has
resulted in far less fatalities than in previous wars. But, the ones who
survive often have hideous head & brain damage, or no legs. How could a
senator look at the results of his/her stupidity?

There are new helmut liners that help to lessen the possibility of
head injuries but the only way to get them is through private groups
collecting money to buy them and send them to Iraq. When a parent
wants to send a helmut liner the soldier will always say send enough
for my entire unit, not just me.
The Iraq war vets who come back and run for office run as Democrats,
win, and make a huge difference. We need more war vets to run for
office and protect vets from VA spending cuts.

How strange. Recent reports of money laundering by Halliburton make me
wonder why our government can't provide these helmet liners. Oops...did I
say "money laundering"? I meant squandering. Or, laundering. Now, I'm not
sure.

This is an excellent example of supporting our troops, not the vitriol
that is spewed by several participants in this newsgroup. Hopefully
these items are not incompatible with military standards and don't put
soldiers in conflict with their dress regulations.

Amazing, you cannot address the Bush administration slashing veterans
benefits. Until you say otherwise I can onlt think you are FOR
sending men into battle but AGAINST taking care of them after they are
wounded.

Yeah. It would be a real tragedy if a soldier didn't dress pretty in favor
of saving his head.
The fact of the matter is, the Army lacks the armor necessary for best
survival in Iraq. These problems have been known since the week of the
invasion, public knowledge within a few weeks of the invasion and, somehow,
in spite of a crapload of money spent on things for which we have no
need(*), there's never enough money to properly equip troops already under
fire. And it's not just armor, every week there's a story in the paper
about equipment the troops do not have. One friend, in Iraq, said that
toilet paper was in chronic short supply. She mentioned a few other things,
which escape me at the moment.
No toilet paper... Maybe that's a clue to where the missing billions in cash
went...
(*) like an ABM defense. Yes, North Korea *could* hit the Aleutians with a
nearly-ICBM. So what? We'd never miss any of those islands and it would be
like painting a big "NUKE ME" sign across Pyongyang.

I am a veteran myself. I admire all who volunteer to protect America
from the foreign forces who would have our way of life destroyed. They
deserve the utmost care when wounded or killed during service. They
especially deserve way more attention and medical facilities than the
able-bodied low-life leeches that live off the government dole and
drive expensive SUVs with flashy wheels and loud stereos. Channel some
of the money going in their direction towards the brave men and women
who are sacrificing their lives for those idiots to get gold caps on
their teeth and smoke crack all day long.

Think (?) about what is more likely to happen over the next 6 months:
- N. Korea nukes the Aleutian Islands
- A lot more soldiers are grievously injured because your president can't
arrange for them to have the right helmets, so a charity has to beg for
money to finish the job.
