OT Star Trek's 40th Anniversary

Star Trek's 40th anniversary has come and gone. Christie's was assigned to
auction off truckloads of Star Trek gear on behalf of Paramount Studios. A
whopping $500,000 winning bid was placed on one of the original handcrafted
1701's.

"Boldly bidding..." There was an interview on BBC radio a while
back, on this subject. It seems the modern way of using CGI has
rather dented the collectibles market -- though I suppose "they"
could auction CDs/DVDs carrying "genuine" data files for models.

I wonder if car makers ever do the same for their products?

Maybe not to the general public. I think the intent to unload (like in
Paramount's case) isn't there. The odd thing about the documentary was we're
never given a solid answer as to why an auction instead of a museum. The
only thing they said was either it gets sold or destroyed.
