Re: Changing brakes on 1988 Corolla. Manual needed.
order yourself a chilton manual. They're about $20-30 USD online, and have
everything you need in order to do basic maintenance, including a little
theory on each system. It's very worth it.

Mike,
I already gave you the info on where to get instructions to do the front and
rear brakes on your Corolla on the internet for FREE. Go to
www.autozone.com and look for repair guides.

Can you get a Toyota Corolla or Geo Prizm (same, except for ABS)
factory manual at a library, even a trade school library? Many
libraries also carry Mitchell manuals, which are almost as good and a
lot better than Chilton's, Haynes, and AllData. The brake information
in the Haynes that was supposedly written for my Nissan applied only to
a completely different model.
If you do rear drum brakes, first take a picture of each side because
manuals usually give a diagram for just one side, and the other side is
a mirror image and it's possible to install the self-adjuster and new
shoes backwards, as I learned. :(
I would like to change the brakes on my 1988 Toyota Corolla. It is a
regular sedan. I have never changed brakes before and would like to do
this myself this time. Is there a place on the internet where I could
download the instructions to guide me through the procedure for changing
the brakes? Or is there a website that could show you the steps to do
this? I might have to change the back brakes too but I am not sure - I
will have to check first.
I would also like to know where someone might recommend you could order
reliable auto parts (such as the brake pads for my 1988 Corolla) online.
Are there any auto parts suppliers on the internet where you could order
reliable parts for a good price or is it recommended to just use your
local auto parts dealer? The dealers close to me are Canadian Tire or
Lordco Auto parts. I'm in Burnaby, BC, Canada.

pay attention to how the brakes were originally configured.
remembering this may greatly help. disk brakes are much easier, to me,
to change than drum brakes, but both can be easy and done by anybody
with two hands and a few tools.
you should notice a few ’clips’ holding the brake pads in place;
remember where they go.
basically, take off the wheels and support the car on jack stands
only.. never the jack.
from there, disassemble what you feel you need to, and examine the
brakes and how they are configured.
there should be two or more bolts with nuts holding the pads against
the rotor. remove them.
after that, if i remember correctly, it’s just a matter of not losing
parts and installing the new pads.
you can even go a step further, if needed, and ’bleed’ the brake
system. this is also beneficial if you feel that your brakes aren’t
operating as efficiently as they should be; you should not be able to
depress the brake all the way to the floor without great resistance.
