1993 Corolla SR5

Problem1:My turn signals are on the blink. Sometimes they work,
sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they start working first slowly then
gradulally speed up to normal blinking rate. This is true for both
left, right and emergency blinking. Is there a fuse or solenoid I can
replace to fix this problem? I cannot find any common factors that
the blinkers fail to work on. eg. humidity, cold, heat, dry, when the
car is warm or cold... it has worked/failed in all kinds of weather.
Started doing this in the past year.

Problem2: sometimes when I turn the ignition key I get a "click"
sound like it is trying to turn over but the starter does’t kick in.
I turn off the key and try again and the car starts fine. It has been
mentioned this is due to the clutch cut off switch going bad.
However, with the clutch not depressed I don’t even get the click.
Sometimes it takes several tries to get the engine to try to start.

Unrelated to the above problems, how much will out of shape tires
cause? I have taken my ’93 Corolla to both a dealer and a tire shop
for allignments and it still pulls to the right. Infact going to the
dealer only made it pull to the right worse. Both shops declared the
alignment was fine that there must be something wrong with the tires
themselves. I haven’t tried changing the tires to the other side to
see if the car pulls in the other direction, yet.

I am not much of a do-it-yourselfer so any advice would be welcome.

I thought turn signals are supposed to blink <g>

Several things can cause the problem. Possible causes are incorrect
flasher, loose ground, or loose power. Unfortunately, a loose ground is a
very likely cause, and you will need to know how to recognize ground wire,
remove it, clean it up with fine sandpaper or emery cloth, and reconnect.[color=blue]

How old is the battery? How are the connections on top of the battery? Are
the connections clean and tight? If they are coated with crud, that can
cause the problem. Get a battery cleaning brush, an old toothbrush, and
baking soda. Mix the baking soda with water in a paper cup so that it is
the consistency of a watery paste and apply with the toothbrush on the crud.
Rinse with lots of water. Once the crud is gone, clean it up with the
battery terminal brush, put everything back together.

Another possibility is a failing starter solenoid and/or starter. A
reputable shop can diagnose the problem for your.

A bad tire can cause a very strong pull. If swapping the tires from side to
side changes the pull, then that is the culprit. Radial tires should not be
switched from the side to side once they have been run for a while so after
your little experiment, you should switch them back.

Have you checked the bliniker? I've never actually had one go on a Toyota,
but it was common on the American cars we owned previously.[color=blue]

You sound like you have an electrical contact problem somewhere. Start with
the battery. Is it good? I just recently had to replace the battery in my
93 Corolla. Are the contacts on the battery clean and free of corrosion?
Does it put out 12.6 volts at rest at sufficient amperage? Low voltage
causes all sorts of funny things to happen, and low amperage causes some
other funny things to happen. I'm willing to bet the blinker problem is
related. The old style American blinkers worked on heat, which depended on
current. If your battery isn't putting out enough, it's not going to blink,
because not enough current will get to the blinker to cause it to heat up
and open the circuit, i.e. blink. How the old American style blinkers
worked, and the principle is still the same, is they had a unit that all the
current went through for the blinkers when they were "on". It had a thermal
element that would heat up and open the circuit, thus turning the blinkers
"off". Then it would cool down again quickly, reclosing the contacts and
causing the blinkers to go back "on". All of this happens several times a
second under normal current flow.

Did they do a proper 4-wheel alignment? I don't know about SR-5's but DX's
require all 4 wheels to be aligned together. If that has been done
properly, (and I've had shops only do the front, so it pays to ask.) then
start checking the tires. Also, when does it pull to the right? When
braking? coasting? accellerating? All the time? That makes a difference,
too. If you have it pulling only when braking, for instance, you may need
the brakes looked at. Does it pull in the steering axle, or does it feel
like the back end is pulling it? Try to get more specific as to what it
does and when it does it.

Re: 1993 Corolla SR5

All the advice you are getting seems good. I would only add that I don't
think your starting problem is the battery as it is intermittent. It is more
likely the starter solenoid and you will have to have someone change it for
you. The blinker is likely a bad ground and you'll probably have to have
someone fix that too. The tires, however, you can probably take care of.
Take it down to a tire shop and have them rotate the tires and see what
happens. Re radials not changing sides, I have read that this was true in
the early days but no longer so. Good luck.

Re: 1993 Corolla SR5

I have a problem like that as well. I turned on my left signal
then got out a looked at the lamp. It went on then it went off,
then it went back on then it went off again, then it went back on
then it went off again, then it went back on then it went off
again. I tried the right side and it did the same thing, it went
on then it went off again several time just like the left side.
Anybody know what's wrong?

I checked behind the wheel, all the screws and nuts back there
are tight. Any other ideas? :)

Next step, when the light goes out, close your eyes, when you hear the
click, open them, repeat as necessary. The light will be on when you open
your eyes!

One of your favorite Ford scenes in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" is where
Liz Taylor in a drunken stupor stumbles back out to her (then new) 1962 Ford
Country Squire station wagon to turn off the turn left turn signal. Then
she goes too far .... now the right signal is flashing ... then the left
again. Finally she gets it turned off and goes back in the house. ;-)

Well, hell, how can we diagnose this problem when we don't know
what year your vehicle is?
