Just wondering if around the country, if Toyota is jacking up the MSRP on
the 05 Prius because of demand. In the Okla. City area at one dealer, they
had the price of around $29,500 (a decked out Prius w/leather, navi system,
etc). They then added an extra line for "Market Adjustment" of 10% more
($2,950) for a total sticker of around $31,450. Is this standard thru the
U.S. or are their big price differences from around other parts of the
country? Appreciate any thoughts!

I've seen it myself in the Southeast where they are doing the same.
It's not just your area.

MSRP is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Dealers are independent
businesses and are free to sell the vehicle (or not) for whatever price they
wish, or what the market will bear. The manufacturer's Monroney Label
(commonly referred to as the window sticker) is a federally mandated
sticker. Many dealers have a supplemental label that is formatted just like
the Monroney Label where they list their prices for things like dealer added
accessories, market adjustment prices, etc.

That 'Market Adjustment' has nothing to do with Toyota corporate, it
is the dealership owner looking to pay off his Aspen vacation faster.
It's all Supply and Demand. The dealer thinks they've got "the hot
car" of the moment, they have a few in stock and more people clamoring
for them than they can ever deliver. So they are willing to sell you
one of the ones sitting there /right now/ IF you fork over extra money
for the privilege - otherwise you can start waiting.
When they don't have a line of people out the door waving extra
money at them for immediate delivery anymore, and they have cars
sitting there for a month before they sell, then that 'Added Dealer
Profit' sticker quietly disappears. If they sit for two months,
suddenly they're willing to cut deals at well below MSRP.
If the car is a true limited production model, you might have to
pony up the extra bucks to get one now - waiting will get you nowhere,
they'll sell out.
But if that "gotta be the first one on my block" demand is only a
temporary thing, caused by early model-year supply bottlenecks that
will get solved, your patience can pay off - big. ;-)
