Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
My daughter got her Echo fuel injector cleaned at a Mr Lube and now
the engine check lite is on. The car seems to run fine etc, Is there
any way to reset this short of talking it to the dealer.

It may be as simple as making sure the gas cap is on tightly. My Echo does
the engine light in that case. Another thing that makes that light go on is
driving thru puddles. Tell her to recheck her gas cap, and if that doesn't
work, you may have a more serious problem

If Mr. Lube did the full blown fuel system service thing, then there is
nothing wrong with the car. I had this done to my Honda Accord one time,
and the check engine light came on while the service was being done.
After I reset the ECU, the light never came back on.
IMO, that full blown service is a waste of money. If you put a bottle of
fuel injector cleaner in your tank once in a while (I do it at about the
same time that I get an oil change), that does more than an adequate job
of cleaning your fuel system.
I don't have any experience with OBD-II compliant cars such as yours, but
I think that resetting the ECU must be done with a special scan tool that
you can buy.
Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
give it a few days/starts. it'll probably reset itself.
it's a product of the cleaning juice.
don't do it again. it's not necessary.
good luck, sammmm

Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
You might check for loose wires or loose vacuum lines. Mr. Lube guy pulled
wires out of a sensor on one of my cars.

Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
We have a 99 corolla , and the check engine light has come on in the past.
We had asked to have it checked at our usual garage and he recommended
taking it to the dealer for diagnostics.
But we have not done this yet..and all I did the last couple of times...like
once a year it comes on...is remove the positive cable from the battery for
a few seconds and replace and the light should go off. This should reset
it...If there is a serious problem the light will be probably come back on
and then it should be checked out.
Good Luck
Cheers
Jason

Yes.
You didn't say what year your Echo is, but my recollection is that they are
all newer than 1996, so they use OBD II (On Board Diagnostics, Level II).
You can buy an OBD II code reader on eBay or at your neighborhood auto parts
store. OBD II is a standard, and all cars built for 1996 and later use this
convention, so the reader will work on all of your cars, and you don't need
a special one for each car you own.
If this is your only post-1996 car, then some auto parts stores will check
out the code reader, like the library checks out its books. You can use the
reader to pull the codes and reset them. Since this is your first time for
the Check Light to come on, my guess is that it's a fluke. Reset it and then
check the codes again if the light comes back on. If I am right, the light
won't be coming on again.
Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
I forgot to mention, there is a data port along the underside of the dash
board in the area of the driver's left knee (Left hand drive). The data port
looks kinda like the port on the back of a printer, but not so many pins.
Frankly, Mr. Lube should have the code reader in its arsenal of tools, and
they should be happy to reset the code for you free of charge. I suspect the
code you have is from the gas cap being left off during the service, and
they should have reset the codes as a function of performing the service.
If you elect to break down and buy the code reader - it goes by several
names - then you should expect to pay in the range of 75 to 150 dollars,
depending on the features you get. Any one maker of the tool will make
several versions, each will do the job you want done, but some will do more.
I would buy a mid-price tool if I was buying one.

Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
Places like Auto Zone will let you use the tool for free that pulls the
codes out. Once you know why the light is coming on, you can elect to ignore
it or get it serviced. Usually, the gas cap is loose.

Re: Echo engine check lite on after fuel injector cleaned .
Dave,
You really should take advantage of the data port and the diagnostic tool.
It will tell you WHY the light came on, and it will also reset the light
without clearing the stored radio stations.
Ask at your neighborhood auto parts store if they will allow you to use the
OBD II Diagnostic Tool. Many parts stores have a variety of specialized
tools that you need once in a life time, and you can check these tools out -
similar to checking a book out from the library. It costs nothing to do
this, and the diagnostic tool can tell you lots of stuff that might be going
on.
