I just bought a 2005 4 Runner 2 wheel drive Limited with the V6 engine.
Looking through the warranty info enclosed in the manual about service, it
mentions tire rotation every 5000 miles along with oil change. *If* this was
done, there is an insert about 100,000 mile tire guarantee, *if* the
requirements are met. In reading, I see that *if* a new tire is required
(3/32nd) tread left (whatever that really means), the purchase is based on
the full retail price of the tire according to Toyota.
I called my tire dealer and he gave me a price on the same tire that comes
on my car for about $112 installed with free lifetime balance and rotation
and road hazard guarantee (265/65/17-Bridgestone). I would be willing to bet
that Toyota has the tire retail *much* higher...I plan to call. Toyota wants
$17 plus tax for the rotation, and 'maybe' a balance (who knows how much
they charge for that) all to stay within the warranty. This means you would
spend more than $180 in 50,000 miles on rotations alone. Sounds like another
dealer 'trap' to me...what say you??

A new car warranty is from the manufacturer, not the dealer (unless you buy
certain kinds of extended warranties). The tire warranty is actually from
the tire manufacturer but honored by the new car manufacturer. You get the
same BS language in a warranty when you buy an after market tire. Forget
about tire warranties, the are not worth the paper they are written on,
unless you have a major malfunction with the tire. Same is pretty much true
for batteries.
I personally don't rotate my tires very often, but that is a controversial
subject.

No, not my first new car...probably like the 15th or so, but first tire
warranty with this kind of wording. I agree with you, I'm not much on
warranties or rotations. Just seeing if anyone had received this same
warranty recently and if it was just a way to get you back for expensive
rotations and even more expensive pro-rated tires when the time came.
Also watch out for tire warranties which come with manufacturer's extended
service agreements. They are usually an optional feature and worthless
since they just cover the first set of tires. Why would you want that with
a 7 year 75k mile service agreement.

You can go to America's Tire or Discount Tire and for, IIRC, $40, buy
a lifetime free rotation and balance contract for the tires that came
on your new vehicle. You can rotate and rebalance every 3000 miles if
you'd like.
The dealer/Toyota cannot legally require you to have work performed by
the dealership, or even by a "professional".
I have bought this service from them for every vehicle that I have
owned for the last 10 years. I can't balance tires, so they handle
that and rotate while they're at it. Everything else, I do myself.

I bought one just like yours last month.
Be sure to check the tightness of your wheel lug nuts after a few hundred
miles. All of mine required lots of tightening up.

Two things about tire warranties. Any replacement cost short of
a tire defect is based on the amount of tread depth remaining.
The replacement cost is based on the full retail price of the
tire which is generally 30% more than at which one can buy that
tire in the real world. If the tire is worn by 50% you can do
better buying a tire on your own. Indeed all tires manufactures
warrant the tire to the dealer as does the vehicle manufacture
warrant the car to the dealer. The only exception is Ford Motor
Company. Ford, since they got hurt badly by Firestones problem,
they now warrant the tires directly, on all their vehicles.
