OT: Mired in Scandals and Indictments, Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay Switches Focus to Threatening Federal Judges

Congressional Republicans Run Rampant Over Rules, Ethics, and the
American People

As the Republican-controlled Congress returns to session on Monday, it
seems clear that they will continue the abuses of power that they have
pursued with reckless abandon up to this point.

Republicans are planning to use the "nuclear option" to obliterate
constitutional checks and balances and force confirmation of Bush's
extremist judicial nominees.

At the same time, Congressional Republicans continue to shield House
majority leader, Tom DeLay, from his ethics and campaign finance
scandals.

Tom DeLay Threatens Federal Judges.

Tom DeLay blasted the judiciary members involved in the Terri Schiavo
case, threatening that they will have to "answer" for their
interpretation of the law.

"This loss happened because our legal system did not protect the
people who need protection most, and that will change,' House
Majority Leader Tom DeLay added in a statement issued hours after
Schiavo's death at a Florida hospice.

'The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for
their behavior," said the Texan." [Associated Press, 4/1/05]

MEANWHILE...

Majority Leader Mired In Growing Scandals

Grand Jury Examining Violations By DeLay's Political Action
Committee, TRMPAC. Texas prosecutors and a grand jury are investigating
Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee created
by Tom DeLay.

"Local prosecutors and a grand jury here have been investigating the
committee, Texans for a Republican Majority, including its use of
corporate donations in the election, lawyers close to the case said.

Investigators are also examining whether there were violations of a law
intended to curb the ability of outside groups to influence the race
for [Texas] House speaker, the lawyers said." [New York Times,
2/16/04]

Grand Jury Indicted Corporations and Three DeLay Associates.

A Travis County grand jury returned 32 felony indictments of eight
corporations and three political associates connected to Tom DeLay.

The indictments accuse Jim Ellis, John Colyandro and Warren RoBold of
violating the Texas Election Code by funneling money raised through
corporate contributions directly into political activities.

Colyandro ran the political action committee, Texas for a Republican
Majority, an offshoot of DeLay's PAC, Americans for a Republican
Majority.

He is accused of illegally using more than $200,000 in corporate
donations in the 2002 House races. [Fort Worth Star Telegram, 9/26/04]

Subpoenaed Documents Show DeLay Had Direct Involvement With Fundraising
Campaign.

According to the New York Times, "Documents, which were entered into
evidence last week in a related civil trial in Austin, the state
capital, suggest that Mr. DeLay personally forwarded at least one large
corporate check to the committee, Texans for a Republican Majority, and
that he was in direct contact with lobbyists for some of the nation's
largest companies on the committee's behalf." [New York Times,
3/9/05]

DeLay Accepted Illegal Trip From Foreign Agent.

House rules state "a Member, officer or employee may not accept
travel expenses from 'a registered lobbyist or agent of a foreign
principal."

According to The Washington Post, "Justice Department documents show
that the Korea-U.S. Exchange Council, a business-financed entity
created with help from a lobbying firm headed by DeLay's former chief
of staff, registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act on Aug.
22, 2001.

DeLay; his wife, Christine; and two other Republican lawmakers departed
on a trip financed by the group on Aug. 25 of that year." [Washington
Post, 3/10/05]

Tom DeLay: The Democrats' Secret Weapon?

Isn't it Ironic?
