reading of trip meter and odometer inconsistent

Hi, I bought a secondhand Corolla. It runs perfectly.
But recently I notice that the trip meter runs faster than the odometer.
(about double the speed)
It appears to me that the trip meter reading is more close to the real
milage.
Anyone can tell me what might be the reason? Thank you.
