I was just comparing my NBC network standard and high-definition
channels. They carry the same programming, yet the high-def is
about four seconds behind standard definition.
It has just GOT to be the fault of the White House. NBC network is
obviously trying to keep something from us. They must be in
Bush's pocket.
It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

Just because you can't prove a conspiracy doesn't mean that they're
not out to get you... ;-)
There's an extra satellite hop or long terrestrial fiber link
involved in there somewhere. I could see a delay for an upconverter
to the proper HD format, but not four seconds worth.
New York probably uplinks the standard definition signal directly
from New York, and ships the HD signal on a fiber to Houston to go up
on a different bird.

Exactly. Each network has its choice as to where and how their signal
is routed. Extra OC-48's ,etc., can also vary depending on network
traffic. The direct route isn't always possible, nor is the time
delay consistent, depending on how busy available fiber is at any
given time.

Or any variation similar to this. You are quite correct.

I just have to ask...
Is it time to buy High Definition or should I wait?

Go for it. The best bargain is still rear-projection. The next best,
but with a better picture, is DLP. Stay away from plasma. It just
isn't real HD yet as it only produces a picture from an HD source but
isn't a full HD pic.

Wait.....The prices will come down. Besides there really is not very
much on TV yet worth while watchiing, except maybe the Democrat
conventions, LOL. If you like movies buy or rent DVDs and use your
computer to view, it's already hi-def.

I'll agree on the projection TVs. They've made great improvments and
the prices are reasonable compared to LCD stuff. And yes DO NOT buy
PLASMA, for more than one reason.

I jumped from Direct TV to Dish Network recently (me refusing to give
the f*ing cable company in the area another dime..). Part of the
offer was either HD or normal tv with TiVO type digital VCR. I opted
for the digital VCR and just love it. I can slam a lib and replay
anything I missed in the heat of battle...LOL
One of these days, I'll jump to HD...
....btw the deal with Dish Network is excellent...up to 4 rooms free
installation...includes the digital vcr and NO long term commitment.

I have been looking at the varies technologies at Best Buy. I'm not
convinced it is time to jump...yet.
Just changed to Dish Network which includes a digital VCR and two
independent satellite receivers for my two rooms. It is excellent!
....and I would just LOVE to watch the Democrats in HD! They are
sooooo much fun in fuzzy normal TV...just imagine what they would be
if you could see all the sweat...<g>
....on movies... Dish Network has a great selection. I can record
anything that interests me and watch it anytime it strikes my fancy.

I'd like to hear the reasons not to by plasma...

Not reliable, frequency of repairs are higher and more expensive. If
you like to listen to shortwave as I do they emit gobs of radio
frequency interference (RFI). As Eric pointed out you can't get HD
resolution with them. They are expensive. Have you ever put your hand
on a plasma screen while it's operating? It gets very warm so maybe
will help heat up your living room, a plus??

We have had Dish network here for several years and have three
receivers. The only complaint I have is rain fade in the spring and
summer. Just when some democrat gets up to start speaking on CSPAN we
get a rain shower and subsequent rain fade, darn it.....LOL.

As Dbu pointed out, there are many. First on my list is the lack of
true HD resolution.
A similar example: You can feed your computer's video to a television
set. Sure it's showing what you feed it, but is the resolution
anywhere near what it is on your LCD or CRT monitor? IOW, it can
provide a picture from an HD source, but doesn't produce it in true
HD resolution.
