OT Wireless networking...questions

I just changed to Verizon for DSL.

Along with the DSL modem (Fujitsu Speedport) they sent a Linksys
Wireless - B Broadband Router.

So far I haven't installed the router. The DSL is directly hooked to
my main PC.

Any tips, cautions before I pop in the 'Easy Installation' disk? <g>

I was running hard wired thru a Linksys router on Earthstink.

2 other computers Laptop and an old Windows 98 desktop.

As soon as you're sure that all is well with no router, shut your PC
down and plug in your Ethernet cables and router into the equation.
Re-boot, then configure the router's setting to secure your wireless
connection so as to prevent unauthorized use of your Wi-Fi signal.
The details should be in your router's manual, but assuming you mean
the router disk, that too should walk you through all steps. I've
installed DLink, Linksys, SMC, Netgear, and Buffalo routers for my
clients and find all of them pretty straightforward now. Much better
software than they used to have.

Thanks Eric.

Yes the DSL installation went pretty well.

The DSL is running just fine straight out of the DSL modem.

I don't have a pressing need for the other computers to be on here
now...so I'll wait a bit before firing up the wireless system.

Be aware that you're running without a firewall. At least use the
old router until you're ready to configure the wireless one.

I was successfully able to ping your IP address which is not good.
If you want some good info on safety and testing, go to www.grc.com,
then go to Shields Up to test your system's invisibility or lack of.

Make sure you shut your PC off before you leave. Of course, if you
don't see this message, you already did. ;-)

He should do what I did. Chuck the whole damned wireless net and get wired.
A lot less headaches, though somewhat cluttered-looking

The router is a hardware firewall and better than some of that software
firewall stuff. I don't use windows and my computer router and cable
modem are set for automatic DHCP, so it's all plug and play, no drivers
and using eithrnet not USB modem, and I have more than one computer here
networked, not using wireless though, maybe someday when I get a laptop
or notebook.

Wireless is a pain at times. We added 1100 sq ft to our home about
two years ago. No sweat on 1/2 an acre, but I'm glad it's over.
Trust me.

During the addition, I had the electrician run CAT5 cable to two new
rooms, and existing upstairs bedrooms. We have five PC's, including
one laptop. Four are directly connected to my router, and my
daughter's laptop is connected via her wireless router to my hardwire
router. Three network printers serve all five PC's.

The only finicky connection is her laptop, but she likes the
flexibility of being able to type in any room she chooses.

During setup, I had to configure the neighbor's wireless router so as
to prevent his PC from trying to grab onto my daughter's router.
After adding a password to his configuration, all was well.

You're right. Headaches.

Re: OT Wireless networking...questions

That's silly, wireless gives you convenience to use your computer
anywhere, not to mention the ability to get rid of the "office" room in
your house. I've had it for over 5 years, and would never go back.
Connectivity problems are almost nil, far more often its my mediocre
cable service.

Not having to worry about someone hacking into your wireless network
sure is!
