Toyota Carina E TD 1996

Help,
Does anyone have any idea with a problem i am having?

I have a Toyota Carina E (1996) ,and my headlight will not work no my
full beam.
I have replaced the control stalk but this has not fixed the problem.
I have replaced the relay and fuses but this still has not fixed the
problem.
My side lights work fine also my flasher full beam lights work,i have
checked to make sure there are live wires going to the light stalk and
relay but this all seems fine.
My headlights do work when i connect a earth wire from the relay and
secure it to the cars body but i can not turn them off via the light
stalk.
I can not think what else it might be.
But mybe there is a genuis out there who my help me???
