I'm quite sure D.R. is out for a scoop now that he's out of a job. I
wish he would at least be a man and own up to his supporting the DNC.
After all, you can keep secrets like this for only so long.

MORON ALERT
Almost as bad as Brit Hume and Sean Hannity lying about what FDR
intended with Social Security.
I noticed that when I presented proof (from FDRs own hand), none of you
scared dittoheads refuted it.

CaptainsQuartersBlog must be completely moronic. This isn't some forgotten
decades-old document, nearly indistinguishable from thousands of others from
the bureaucratic archives we're talking about. This is recent, unique,
readily distinguishable from the author's other correspondence and still
current.
If it wasn't authentic, it's unique enough and recent enough that the author
would know it was a fake and say so. None of the principals have claimed
it's a fake, ergo it's real.

The reporter re typed the documents and 'destroyed' the originals.

If it wasn't an authentic copy, the author could say so. So, yes, in this
case, I can trust the journalist.

Ah, I see. You misunderstand me; I was not quite clear enough. When I said
"author", you thought was referring to the journalist. That's not what I
intended. What I meant was this:
Why doesn't the alleged author of the memo, and I presume we're talking
about the Jack Straw memo, say it was a fake? If the journalist is lying,
this would seem to be a natural thing to do. However, Jack Straw has not
stepped forward to contradict the journalist.
Therefore, we can safely conclude the journalist is trustworthy, at least in
this case, and the memo is real.

These memo's were 'supposed' to be secret.
If (a big IF) they were real...
The 'author' would be crazy to come out in public to support
them....wouldn't you think?

What do you think you're getting at? Do you have "leaker" confused with
"author?" I can readily see where whoever leaked this to the press would
want to remain anonymous.
However, the author of the Downing Street Memo, Jack Straw, the Foreign
Minister, hasn't denied the authenticity of what was published.
If Straw didn't author the Downing Street Memo, why wouldn't he say so?
That would certainly permit us to say the journalist who published the note
was lying. What's the downside to Straw saying, "It's fake," if, in fact,
it IS fake? The upside to calling a fake a fake would be to get Blair's
Government out of a slight jam (this isn't helping Blair's popularity).
There's always the satisfaction of correcting the public record, of course.
Honesty is a social good and should be promoted wherever possible and used
as a means to open and effective government.
Heck, if the memo's fake, it's also not secret, so Straw wouldn't be bound
by secrecy orders, either, and could freely denounce it.

Unless Straw steps forward and says, "No, I didn't write that," there's no
reason to believe it's fake.
