If the crankcase was developing enough pressure to actually pump oil to the
top of the engine, you would see blue smoke or oil leaks.
How much oil is being consumed? Up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles is
acceptable.
Things to check: look for evidence of oil in the coolant or coolant in the
oil. If there is coolant in the oil, the oil will look like a milkshake or
have swirls that look like a milkshake, and oil in the coolant would float
at the top of the radiator or overflow bottle. Oil and coolant mixing is a
sign of a head gasket leak.

I don't believe it. Jack Benny would have used used cooking oil...

Thank you so much for responding.
I will check these things as soon as I can.
I'm not exactly sure how much is being consumed how fast but will
start monitoring it. It seems like a quart every 2000-2500, so maybe
that's not such a big problem.
My other cars, both Hondas, don't seem to consume any over the course
of 3000 or more miles and they're both older with twice the mileage.
In fact, I don't ever remember owning any car, except for an 84 Ford
Escort, that consumed a qt per 1000.

If the car is using a quart every 2,000 to 2,500 miles, that is well within
acceptable usage.
