Whine when A/C turned on

Need help with the A/C problem. What is the whine noise when I turn on the
A/C? Compressor? Doesn't make the noise all the time, but certainly when
the A/C is first turned on. Thanks.

Always check belt first. Cheap and easy to replace. THEN look at the
other items.

Why belt? when u first turn on AC, compressor comes on, immediately
there is an extra load on the belt, if not tensioned properly, it will
then slip, and whine.

If the belt is slipping, it will squeal, not whine.

The OP didn't describe vehicle age and mileage, but after time, it is normal
for some refrigerant to leak. Most vehicles have a sight glass on the
receiver drier. With the AC on, check the sight glass and see if any white
foam is visible. If so, then the refrigerant needs recharging.
