I'm trying to find the correct roof bars for my elderly Toyota (it's new to
me though). It's a K reg August 1992 model - so the slightly newer shape of
the two when the change occurred. Corresponds to Haynes Manual Aug 1992 to
1997 models.
I've tried my Halfords bars off my old metro, but they don't quite fit in
the narrower gutters on the new car - well not securely enough for my
liking.
I thought it might be cheaper buying some new ones on line. Now it seems
that a lot of the websites have guides to help you select the correct kit
for your model of car.
All say Thule bars 120cm Part #: 761. No problems. However, there seems to
be a real difference of opinion on which footpacks to get
www.roofbox.co.uk says Thule guttered feet (4) # 369
www.roofrackshop.co.uk says Part #: 368
www.car-roofracks.co.uk says Special Guttered Foot Pack # 368
Toyota dealer - "computer says no"
Halfords in-store flip-chart says floor pack # 369
http://www.roof-rack-supplies.co.uk/ says Paddy Hopkirk Roof Bars 400
series roof bars (2) foot units (4) and the correct fitting kit for a
Toyota Corolla 4-D, 5-D 92-97. Sweet. Anyway, back to Thule because it's
bugging me....
www.thule.co.uk website gives guttered foot pack Part #: 368.
Now, download the .pdf fitting guides from the same website gives a twist:
Fitting guide for footpack 368 reads it's for the 88-92 Corolla.
Fitting guide for footpack 369 reads it's for the Corolla 93-97, 98-99 and
00-01
Which one is correct? Or does it not make any difference?
Experience/suggestions gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Stu.
Oh, and are my old square Halfords bars 2cmX3cm compatible with the Thule
footpacks?

Go with Yakima. Among other things, it is American made.

I've seen the OT discussions, thanks. I'll stay away, though it's
reassuring that you guys do debate the issues. We were beginning to wonder
over here....
I've just visited yakima.com and they only list US and Canadian dealers.
Had a quick UK only search for the brand on Google - not really any joy
there either.
I don't think your US Corolla would be any different to mine. The Haynes
manual I have says, "As the main part of this book has been written in the
US, it uses the appropriate US component names, phrases and spellings".
Then gives a long list of translations like "header = exhaust manifold".
Yeah, I like my 'new' car. It's now got 137,000 miles on the clock.
Everything works, no rattles, smooth on the motorway and it seems quite
nippy after my last car (which had a 998cc engine). No air conditioning or
electric windows fitted, but that just adds to the 'reliability' doesn't it?
Onwards and upwards.
Thanks for your suggestion Scott. I'll keep looking.

eh... prolly would be worth buying a new one (oh you probably wanted
that anyway). Have you contacted yakima directly, maybe?

Right right. I was just wondering what kind of car has such a tiny
engine?

On the high street maybe, though it's clinging on:

No, one's ever heard of them here. It's not worth me paying to get it
shipped in from the US. I have, however, found that the sole UK Thule
importer is located 5 miles away from where I live. They used to have a
shop outlet there apparently, but I drove up earlier this afternoon and it
looks like it's just 'goods in and 'goods out' operation these days. All
shut up today anyhow. There is an auto parts shop literally over the road
which sells the kit. They think it's part #369 from their Thule catalogue
(differing from the Thule website, but matching the fitting guide) so I'll
give it a go. Didn't have it in as it's a 'special order item', but it'll
be there on Monday. There shouldn't be any trouble exchanging it if it's
the wrong one.

Though I suggested Yakama for the top rack, I do use a Thule bike rack
fitted to a hitch on my wagon. Top quality stuff.

But Scott, we're talking about nowadays, not back in the 1960s when you
used to ride a bike.

***SIGH*** Another American company dissed because they didn't have the

Got them. The footpacks (#369) did fit on my Halfords bars and the whole
lot fits quite nicely on the Corolla. If it's any consolation the surfboard
that will fit on the top was made and purchased in the US.
