The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is in between the exhaust and
intake manifolds.
The check engine light can come on if the EGR valve is stuck closed or
partially open; if there is insufficient vacuum to the EGR valve (vacuum
leak, bad vacuum switching valve or bad vacuum control valve); if the EGR
gas temp sensor or gas temp sensor circuit is bad.

Rap the EGR valve with the handle of a screwdriver to see if it frees up,
install a vacuum gauge, and trouble shoot the EGR gas temp sensor circuit.
